Tragedy in Patagonia: how five hikers died in Torres del Paine National Park

On November 17, a violent storm struck Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. This sudden storm, accompanied by strong winds, hit a large group of trekkers who were hiking around the massif, a classic trek but one that is exposed to the elements. Five of them died, making it the worst tragedy in Patagonia in years. We have retraced the sequence of events.

Patagonia remains a wild territory where winds can reach speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. On November 17, a storm swept through Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. The trek known as the “Circuit O” involves walking around the Paine massif and its famous peaks, the spectacular Torres del Paine and the mysterious Cuernos del Paine. It is a trek of about 140 kilometers on foot, taking 7 to 9 days to complete, and is traveled by dozens of people every day
