This atypical mountaineer first came to the public’s attention a few years ago thanks to a documentary broadcast by the Franco-German TV channel Arte. He had just one ambition: to make history by climbing Everest in winter via an innovative and difficult new route. After a couple of training routes in the Himalayas (solo first ascents of Nangpai Gosum II in 2017 and Amotsang in 2019), he set off in 2020 to climb the Roof of the World by its west ridge and the Hornbein Couloir. “He has no chance” was Hans Kammerlander’s verdict. Kobusch gave up at 7,250 metres.
He then moved to Chamonix and prepared to make another attempt on his Everest project at the beginning of 2022. Once again, he failed to reach his goal, but Kobusch sees his experience as another step in the learning process.
