Tomàs Aguiló and Corrado Pesce were descending the north face of Cerro Torre after topping out on a new route (La Norte, 1,200 m, 90°, 7a, A2) when they were struck by an avalanche of ice and rock.
Despite his injuries, Aguiló, an Italian guide who now lives in El Chalten, was able to descend until he was picked up by a large rescue caravan and airlifted out. Pesce was not so lucky; trapped by his more severe injuries, he succumbed.
